Why Did Phoebe Cates Leave Show-Biz So Early?

When Phoebe Cates was a teenager, she appeared in several classic ’80s movies. It wasn’t long after her “Drop Dead Fred” role in the early ’90s that she said goodbye to a promising acting career in favor of raising her family. Her rise to stardom came from movies like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Private School,” and “Gremlins.”

In 1989, Cates married fellow actor Kevin Kline, and they have been happy ever since. It seems family life was worth giving up her acting career after all. As of 2022, she owns a Manhattan clothing boutique and only made a short return to acting in 2001’s “The Anniversary Party.”
