The need to find the elusive perfect pair of jeans was what compelled Doris and Donald Fisher to create the Gap fashion brand. They opened their first San-Francisco-based store in 1969 and at that time, they sold jeans and music. Doris took on the role of the store’s merchandiser and held the position until 2003. Doris and her later husband accumulated 1,100 art pieces over the years and their vast collection includes the works of 185 artists. They loaned their collection and provided financial assistance to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. As a Stanford University alumna, Doris has also served as one of the university’s trustees.
