View from Liberty’s Torch
This rare 1930s photograph from the Statue of Liberty’s torch balcony captures visitors gleaming upward from the crown. Once open to the public, the vantage point offered a unique perspective of New York Harbor. However, since 1916, the torch has been closed to visitors following damage caused by an explosion during World War I.
Capturing such an image today would be impossible for the general public, as access to the torch remains restricted. This historical photograph thus holds significant value, offering a glimpse into an experience that modern visitors can no longer enjoy and highlighting the evolving relationship between iconic landmarks and public accessibility.
