Max Yasgur, A Name To Remember
A relatively unknown fact about Woodstock is that it didn’t take place in a town called Woodstock. “Woodstock” happened to be the name of the company that financed the festival: Woodstock Ventures, an enterprise that’s still running today and that, according to Reuters, is continuing to make tons of money.
But Woodstock Ventures’ efforts wouldn’t be possible without the collaboration of Max Yasgur, a Bethel farmer who allowed the festival to take place on his dairy farm. Sadly, the audacious small-town man was criticized by the locals to the point of being sued! He died only 4 years after the festival, in 1973.
